Pagans, you aren't actually practicing your religion unless you butcher an animal and wipe its blood all over everything

I guess the Pythagoreans and Orphics weren't really Hellenists. Maybe they were "paganism lite."

I love Classicists. Don't they read Plato anymore? Or is that, like, so passé?

Must be very passe.
Porphyry, Plato, Pythagoras, all them guys must be passe.

Heck, even Hesiod must be passe.

No crap.
I always heard great things about Bulfinch until I bought a used copy and read the intro. It pissed me off so much that if it wasn't a book, I would have thrown it across the room cursing. Arrogant prick.

Wait, what the hell? It's like he's grasping at historicities of "inauthenticity" like it actually matters.

And this is a CLASSICIST!

I can't call lack of blood sacrifice inauthentic. There were plenty of groups in ancient Greece who didn't butcher animals in the name of the gods.

And then after that line of thought fails him, he goes on to call all Hellenists "essentially" mauvais-foi in some indiscernible way that distinguishes us from Christians Hindus.

I don't understand. Does he need us to be in bad faith? Why?

Prejudice. Why should we be taken seriously when the church has been bashing us and our practices for so many years?

Oh, the blogger said that plainly enough. Her blog describes her as "wickedly subversive," which is media code for "snarky and shallow." She can't be catty and sarcastic about a valid religion, since she'd be accused of prejudice, so she used to target paganism.

Then she started getting pagans in her classes who are offended when she mocks their religion, robbing her of her laffs -- OH NOES -- she has to reassure herself that their religion is bullshit so it's okay to make fun of it. Cue arbitrary reason.

Had the same thing in a comparative religion class with a Catholic teacher. He was mildly annoyed by having a Hindu in the class, since he'd never bothered studying any religion not based in Jerusalem ... and he was pissed off to have to watch his mouth around a pagan.
